Tour Description

Sorrento hardly needs an introduction: the cliffs, the bay, the lemons. But beyond the postcard views, there’s a historic center filled with narrow medieval streets, family-run kitchens, and one of the last remaining lemon groves.

On this Sorrento food tour through the historic center, you’ll start at a cheese factory that has been pulling fresh mozzarella daily since 1900, taste Neapolitan pizza with a Sorrentine twist from a wood-fired oven on Corso Italia, and sit down at a family osteria tucked away in a quiet corner of the vicoletti for gnocchi alla Sorrentina and meatballs paired with a glass of local wine. Along the way, your guide will lead you through medieval alleyways and hidden courtyards, sharing the stories and traditions that still shape daily life in Sorrento.

The tour ends at a tasting room that most visitors never find, where limoncello is made the way it has always been made in Sorrento, and where the Bay of Naples feels close enough to remind you exactly where you are.

What Makes Sorrento Special

Sorrento sits on the edge of a cliff above the Bay of Naples, looking across at Vesuvius on one side and down the Amalfi Coast on the other. It has been pulling people in since the ancient Greeks settled here, and the Romans built their villas along the same cliffs that tourists photograph today. The old city sits behind medieval walls, its streets laid out in a grid that hasn’t changed much in two thousand years.

The historic center is where Sorrento actually lives. Narrow alleyways called vicoletti run between 18th-century buildings, opening onto small piazzas and hidden courtyards. The Sedil Dominova, the only remaining seat of the 14th-century civic chiefs of the Campania region, still stands on one corner. A lemon grove that has been here for over 150 years sits quietly behind one of the city’s oldest restaurant facades, one of the last left in the center of town.

Sorrento is also the most practical base on this stretch of coastline. Capri, Pompeii and the towns of the Amalfi Coast are all within easy reach. But the city rewards those who slow down and stay within its walls long enough to find what’s actually there.
