What Makes Vila Nova de Gaia Special
Vila Nova de Gaia, sitting on the south bank of the Douro River directly across from Porto’s historic center, is the spiritual home of Port wine. For centuries, the world’s finest port wines have been aged in the riverside cellars — or caves — that line its slopes, and today this neighborhood remains the beating heart of Porto’s winemaking tradition.
Food in Vila Nova de Gaia is deeply connected to this heritage. Beyond the famous wine cellars, the neighborhood’s backstreets are home to authentic local restaurants and food shops that most visitors never discover. From crispy fish croquettes and rich codfish dishes to the iconic francesinha sandwich, Vila Nova de Gaia offers a genuine taste of northern Portuguese cuisine — all set against one of the most stunning riverside landscapes in Europe.

Magic hidden gems. What an awesome day we had and experienced some hidden gems along the way. Our guide, who was both professional and knowledgably, really did make everything so special, with excellent conversation as we walked the lanes and streets of Gaia. Although the weather was cold and a few showers the indoor activities made the outdoor weather pale into the background.

Our “Porto Wine and Dine” tour with Diogo R was excellent! The locations were varied and gave a good view of the variety of different but each authentic Porto cuisines and locales. All the places we visited had excellent food and drink.
However what really made it a special experience was Diogo guiding us. First of all, he made all the logistics a breeze. We could just relax and follow along. And he knew various bits of culture and history, but about places we stopped and ate and also places along the way. But most important he was incredibly friendly and fun!

Perfect day filled with food and wine (and a great tour guide) Ribas gave an excellent tour of food and wine in Porto. We started in the wine cellar and learned about the process of making port and had a great tasting. After that we hit a bunch of food pots and ate delicious food and of course had more wine. The conversation was great and Ribs provided so much insight into the culture of Portugal and was just a great dude to talk to in general. If you want to feel like you’re on a trip with a local friend, definitely take this tour.

BEST TOUR I’VE EVER DONE I cannot express how great this tour was! Ribas was the most amazing amazing tour I’ve ever had. I already loved Eating Europe tours because of how incredible my Athens tour was but Ribas and this tour blew me out of the water. It was a long tour where we got to try Port, so much amazing food, the most fantastic sandwich I have ever had. It felt like hanging out with a friend, a local, someone who’s there to take care of you. Diogo was absolutely fantastic. This tour is 10/10 worth it. I would give it 10 stars if I could!

Is a food tour in Porto worth it?
Absolutely! There’s no better way to experience the beautiful city of Porto and its culture than a food tour with a local guide.
What food is Porto famous for?
Porto’s culinary scene is a rich reflection of northern Portugal’s hearty traditions and riverside culture. You can’t leave without trying francesinha (a layered sandwich with steak, ham, sausage, melted cheese, and a spicy beer sauce), tripas à moda do Porto (the city’s signature tripe stew), and bacalhau com natas (salt cod baked with cream and potatoes). Be sure to sample alheira (a flavorful smoked sausage) and caldo verde (Portugal’s beloved kale soup). And of course, no visit is complete without enjoying a glass of Port wine, the city’s most famous export.
What’s included in the price of the food tour?
All food and drinks, as well as your professional local guide are included in the price you pay for the tour. No hidden charges or upsells here.
How long are the tours?
Our Porto tours range in length from 3.5 to 4 hours.
What neighborhoods or areas do the tours cover?
Each tour’s area can be found listed as its “location”. For example, you might explore Vila Nova de Gaia or the historic center!

There is no dress code on our tours, however it’s recommended to wear a good pair of shoes (these are walking tours, after all!) and be prepared for the elements, even though most of our stops are indoors.
Are tourists welcome in Porto?
Yes, absolutely. There’s a Portuguese word, convívio, which captures a feeling of friendly, convivial socialising. That’s the feeling we believe every visitor should experience in Porto.
You’ll find that spirit of convívio from locals when you connect with the city respectfully. It’s found when you support the small, family-run wine cellars, help keep the riverside quiet at night in Ribeira, and take the time to appreciate the city’s stunning tilework. This is the authentic Porto experience.
It’s this connection we create on our Eating Europe tours. We step away from the crowds and take you to the places locals truly love, introducing you to the people behind the food and the stories that make this city one of a kind.
Tour Experience & Expectations
Will the guide speak my language?
Our guides are all fluent in English, and of course speak Portguese as well. For requests for tours in other languages, please contact us.
Can I take photos during the tour?
Yes! You are welcome to take photos and videos of the food and scenery throughout your tour. If you would explicitly like to get photos of fellow guests or your guide, we kindly ask that you get their permission first.
Do I need to tip the guide?
Tips for our lovely guides are not required, but they are appreciated!
Will we visit the same places as other tours?
No. While some tours may have one or two stops which other groups visit (can’t help it if they’re popular!), Eating Europe are proud that the majority of stops on every Porto tour are restaurants and vendors who work exclusively with us.
Do you offer private or custom tours?
We do! Please see the “Book a Private Tour” option or contact us, and we can arrange a private or custom Porto tour to suit your specific needs.
