What Makes Florence's City Center Special
Florence’s centro storico is a living Renaissance masterpiece — but behind the Duomo, the Uffizi, and the marble facades, a deeply rooted food culture quietly steals the show. Its narrow streets and sun-warmed piazzas have fed Florentines the same way for centuries, with a cuisine built on simplicity, quality ingredients, and zero waste.
The food here is Tuscan to its bones. Market stalls at the Mercato Centrale pile high with fresh porcini, pecorino, and hand-cut prosciutto, while tripe vendors — lampredottai — serve Florence’s most iconic street food from carts that haven’t moved in decades. Trattorias tucked behind the tourist trails dish up ribollita, pappa al pomodoro, and bistecca alla fiorentina charred over open flames — massive, magnificent, and shared with nothing more than salt and good olive oil. Between meals, gelaterias serve scoops made from real cream and seasonal fruit, and enotecas pour glasses of Chianti and Brunello in candlelit cellars. Florence doesn’t chase trends or reinvent itself — it simply cooks with the confidence of a city that got it right a long time ago and sees no reason to change.

This tour was everything I had hoped it would be. It was even more special because of Sara, our guide! There were only 4 of us on the tour, since it is February, so she was able to have a little extra fun with us. The opportunity for us to ask questions was wonderful. She knew her stuff and was able to weave all of the food and beverages into a complete picture of Tuscany and Florence. It may not be the cheapest, but you get what you pay for. I will use Eat in other locations when the opportunity arises.

Assia was an absolute gem and I couldn’t recommend her more! She took us to the places that locals go to for food and drink and it was so refreshing to get away from the touristy areas and eat some real Tuscan food in a quiet neighborhood. She was so informative about food, neighborhoods (in more than just Florence, pretty much any city you asked her about), and other attractions. She was also just a good person and it was lovely to share an evening with her and our group! 10/10 experience and would recommend to anyone!

Amazing walking tour with Eli who showed us a delicious variety of food, wine and other drinks. The cured meats, cheese (oh the cheese!) nude pasta and gelato (yum) all within easy walking distance in Oltarno.
Great knowledge, enthusiasm and entertaining experience from our host who knew all of the proprietors personally and a really friendly group. We would definitely recommend this trip.

Sara P was a great guide. Although I’ve been to Italy so many times she managed to still discover new things to me both in terms of wine and food but also customs and stories. I thoroughly enjoyed the evening and would recommend this event to everyone.

My guide was Caterina a local and her passion for her culture really made this experience amazing. Not only is she from the area but she also is a lover of food and wine. She explained the history of the food we ate and the differences in the wine. You can tell when I guide is just trying to get through it but she was there to not only guide us but make our experience enjoyable. I’ve been on a lot of these and while they are good this tour stood out as my favorite I’ve been on.

Our Florence food tours are led by people who've spent their lives eating, cooking, and shopping in this city. Local guides who know every stall by name, wine lovers who can talk Chianti for hours, and home cooks who learned from their nonnas. They skip the tourist traps and take you where Florentines actually gather — because the best way to understand this city isn't in a gallery, it's around a table.

There is no dress code on our tours, however it’s recommended to wear a good pair of shoes (these are walking tours, after all!) and be prepared for the elements, even though most of our stops are indoors.
Are tourists welcome in Florence?
Yes, absolutely. There’s an Italian concept from the Renaissance, sprezzatura, which means a kind of effortless grace. It’s a feeling of beauty without trying too hard, and we believe every visitor should experience it in Florence.
You’ll find that spirit of sprezzatura from locals when you connect with the city respectfully. It’s found when you support the artisan workshops in the Oltrarno district, don’t touch the produce at the Sant’Ambrogio market, and take a quiet moment to appreciate art away from the main crowds. This is the authentic Florence experience.
It’s this connection we create on our Eating Europe tours. We step away from the crowds and take you to the places locals truly love, introducing you to the people behind the food and the stories that make this city one of a kind.
Tour Experience & Expectations
Will the guide speak my language?
Our guides are all fluent in English, and of course speak Italian as well. For requests for tours in other languages, please contact us.
Can I take photos during the tour?
Yes! You are welcome to take photos and videos of the food and scenery throughout your tour. If you would explicitly like to get photos of fellow guests or your guide, we kindly ask that you get their permission first.
Do I need to tip the guide?
Tips for our lovely guides are not required, but they are appreciated!
Will we visit the same places as other tours?
No. While some tours may have one or two stops which other groups visit (can’t help it if they’re popular!), Eating Europe are proud that the majority of stops on every Florence tour are restaurants and vendors who work exclusively with us.
Do you offer private or custom tours?
We do! Please see the “Book a Private Tour” option or contact us, and we can arrange a private or custom Florence tour to suit your specific needs.
