Tour Description

Copenhagen exploded onto the global food scene in the mid-2000’s, but real ones know it’s always been home to world-class food. Join us on this incredibly unique food tour which traces the city’s history from the 1600s all the way through to today, where world-class chefs are innovating at the cutting edge (pun intended) of cuisine.

Spanning from historic Nyhavn to the canals of Christianshavn, you’ll sample classic Danish food (artisan smørrebrød), high-quality fusion (tacos from a NOMA-trained chef), and, of course, the world-famous Danish hot dog. You think we could leave that out? Feel hygge in its truest sense, as you feel the warmth of authentic neighborhood life in Byen.

What make Nyhavn & Christianhavn special

The journey from Nyhavn to Christianshavn is a walk through Denmark’s shifting identity. What was once a gritty 17th-century commercial port filled with sailors and merchant ships has evolved into a sleek, design-driven harbor front where the water is clean and the architecture is world-class. Just across the Inderhavnsbroen bridge lies Christianshavn, Copenhagen’s “Mini-Amsterdam”. Conceived by King Christian IV and his Dutch architects in the 1600s, this neighborhood remains defined by its winding canals, historic warehouses, and colorful gabled houses. Here, houseboats and bicycle paths weave together a distinctively authentic slice of everyday life that feels miles away from the typical tourist trail.

The local food scene is a testament to this blend of deep tradition and high-stakes innovation. You’ll find the precision of Noma-trained chefs working out of playful street food stalls at Broens, bringing fine-dining craftsmanship to casual bites like artisan tacos. Modern Nordic comfort is reimagined at every turn, whether it’s at the world’s first restaurant dedicated to elevating humble porridge or overlooking the harbor where smørrebrød is treated like a work of contemporary art. Amidst this culinary evolution, the spirit of hygge remains unshakable. This isn’t just a place to eat; it’s a neighborhood that invites you to slow down and savor the quiet craftsmanship of the Danish way of life.

Born in Seattle but a true nomad, I grew up across Africa and Asia, studied in Europe, and worked in the US. Copenhagen has been home for the past 10 years.
I can’t live without Stegt flæsk med persillesovs - crispy pork belly with parsley sauce and potatoes.
In any Copenhagen neighborhood, stop by a butcher, grab a piece of already cooked stegt flæsk to go, find a bench, and repeat in the next neighborhood 🤩

For something heartier, try grød (gourmet porridge reimagined with seasonal ingredients) or chef-driven street food inspired by the city’s best restaurants. And of course, no visit is complete without sampling some of Denmark’s world-famous Danish pastries, from buttery spirals to aromatic knots.

Are tourists welcome in Copenhagen?

Are tourists welcome in Copenhagen?
Yes, absolutely. There’s a Danish word, hygge, which captures a sense of coziness, soulfulness, and shared warmth. That is the atmosphere we believe every visitor should experience when exploring Copenhagen.

You’ll find that welcoming spirit when you connect with the city’s authentic local rhythm. It’s found when you support long-standing family businesses like Bodenhoffs Bageri in Christianshavn, navigate the harbor crossings by bike, and embrace the quiet charm of the canal-side warehouses. This is the genuine Copenhagen experience.

At Eating Europe, we facilitate this connection by moving beyond the typical tourist path. Across five unique stops, we take you where locals truly eat, introducing you to the artisans and narratives that turn simple traditions into the vibrant Danish identity we see today.

Tour Experience & Expectations

Will the guide speak my language?

Our guides are all fluent in English, and of course speak Danish as well. For requests for tours in other languages, please contact us.

Can I take photos during the tour?

Yes! You are welcome to take photos and videos of the food and scenery throughout your tour. If you would explicitly like to get photos of fellow guests or your guide, we kindly ask that you get their permission first.

Do I need to tip the guide?

Tips for our lovely guides are not required, but they are appreciated!

Will we visit the same places as other tours?

No. While some tours may have one or two stops which other groups visit (can’t help it if they’re popular!), Eating Europe are proud that the majority of stops on every Copenhagen tour are restaurants and vendors who work exclusively with us.

Do you offer private or custom tours?

We do! Please see the “Book a Private Tour” option or contact us, and we can arrange a private or custom Copenhagen tour to suit your specific needs.
