Eat your way through Portuguese history…
During the 15th and 16th century Portuguese sailors traveled to corners of the earth unexplored by Europeans before, bringing back rich and diverse cuisines that can still be tasted in traditional Portuguese food today.
Our 3.5-hour evening food tour explores the international influences on Portuguese gastronomy. It’s set in Bairro Alto, an old bohemian neighbourhood best known for its nightlife. You’ll stop at six carefully selected eateries and hear the stories behind each of the dishes you taste.
Try alheira, a pheasant sausage invented by Portuguese Jews as an alternative to pork, which is forbidden in the Jewish religion. Sit down for petiscos (traditional Portuguese sharing plates) with an African twist. And of course no Portugal food tour is complete without bacalhau (codfish)! Did you know the Portuguese have over 365 salted cod fish recipes? Learn how codfish has become a staple in Portuguese cuisine even though it can’t be caught off the coast.
Our food experience shows you a fascinating side of Portuguese gastronomy that others don’t see. Plus you’ll enjoy traditional dishes, old legends and fun facts along the way.
