Lisbon has a lot of cool neighborhoods, and one that I’m a huge fan of is Santos. I always recommend people stay in this historic aristocratic district with a modern, creative vibe. Not only is there plenty to see and do, but it also puts you close to some of the best food markets in Lisbon.

Why Santos Lisbon Stands Out in the City

For me, it’s the atmosphere in Santos, Lisbon, that sets it apart, from the cobbled streets and views of the Tagus River to galleries like the National Ancient Art Museum and the Museum of Puppetry. And not to forget the lovely cafes like Ele Ela!

Sometimes, I bring my Lisbon food tours through here in the mornings to enjoy the gentle marina breezes, azulejo façades, and the sounds of street musicians. Dining and nightlife are the main focus here in the evenings, with endless spots for port wine and plenty of places to grab a bite, including specialties like bacalhau.

If Santos is on your list of things to do when visiting Lisbon, this guide will help you explore the area like a local.

Neighborhood History and Character

One of the biggest draws of Santos is its rich history and character. Walking through the neighborhood is a feast for the eyes, with 18th-century mansions and palaces reflecting its aristocratic and industrial past

Since 2005, the area has undergone a significant transformation, with lots of real estate and investment and former warehouses reimagined as creative and cultural hubs that remain central to its identity today.

Like many of Lisbon’s riverside districts, Santos is strongly linked to the city’s industrial and maritime heritage. Its proximity to the Tagus made it a hub for trade and commerce in the past.

Attractions and Landmarks

Santos has a long list of attractions and landmarks that you need to plan your visit around. Take in the grandeur of the Basilica da Estrela, unwind in peaceful green spaces like Tapada das Necessidades and Jardim da Estrela, and visit one of the city’s largest cemeteries, Cemitério dos Prazeres.

If you’re into art, the National Ancient Art Museum is a must-see, as it’s home to an impressive collection of masterpieces. The Museum of Puppetry offers something a little different, focusing on the world of puppets. For sweeping views of the Tagus waterfront, head towards the 25 de Abril Bridge.

You may also want to have a local experience while in Santos. If so, Santos Collective Market is a great spot to pick up fresh bites and freshly made products. When hunger strikes, the nearby LX Factory creative hub is packed with over 50 bars and restaurants.

Things to See and Do

There are quite a number of activities and things to do in Santos, so you’ll have to be strategic with your itinerary if you only have limited time. A walking tour along Santos’s riverside streets and gardens is one of the best ways to experience the area, as you’ll be able to pack in loads.

If you end up here during the summer and the heat becomes too much, go look for one of the galleries, markets, or historic mansions for a little break to escape the sunshine.

Taking a boat tour from Docas de Santo Amaro is a big highlight for many, as you’ll get to admire the waterfront from a different perspective. Afterward, you can unwind and relax at the Lisbon Marina and watch the vessels come and go throughout the day.

Restaurants, Cafés, and Nightlife

Foodies will have plenty of culinary gems to keep them busy while they’re in Santos.

Start your day with brunch classics at Mila – Santos – Specialty Coffee Brunch & Salad Bar, or explore international flavors at Yallah Lisboa. Travelers who want to try traditional Portuguese fare should stop by Lá Madragoa Restaurant, especially for their garlicky polvo à lagareiro.

As you wander the neighborhood, you’ll likely come across a few quiosques. These are quintessential Portuguese outdoor cafés with Quiosque de Santos being one of the most popular spots for a pick-me-up.

When it gets to evening time, settle in at one of the many local bars. A popular local boozer is Narcos Bar, with its extensive shot menu that will allow you to try all kinds of spirits.

Marina and Waterfront

The Lisbon Marina and the Tagus riverfront are absolutely beautiful stops in Santos. Whether you’re looking to take a boat trip, catch a glimpse of nearby beaches, or simply enjoy a walk along the river, you’ll find it all here.

Docas de Santo Amaro is a scenic marina area set beside the 25 de Abril Bridge, lined with plenty of dining options, including the stylish Five Oceans, known for its excellent seafood. From here, you’re also within easy reach of the Oeiras–Cascais coastline, offering some dramatic scenery.

Where to Stay in Santos, Lisbon

Santos has many accommodation options for visitors to choose from. A lot of people like to stay in a hotel that was once a mansion in this part of the city, and one of the best places to do this is Hotel York House Lisboa

If you prefer to have more space than what you’d get in a hotel room, book a short-term rental or upscale apartment instead. There are plenty of centrally located options close to the attractions we’ve mentioned.

Transportation and Accessibility

One of the best things about Santos, Lisbon, is how easy it is to reach from central Lisbon and nearby neighborhoods. You don’t even need to stay here if you can’t find a nice hotel, as you can easily use public transport or walk.

From Cais do Sodré station, it’s less than a five-minute journey. You can also take bus 706 or hop on Tram 18E. The iconic Tram 25 runs through Santos as well.

Alternatively, you can rent a bike and follow one of the riverside cycle paths, or go on foot to the neighborhood if your hotel is in a nearby district.
