Venice has its fair share of lagoon islands. One of which I always keep going back to is Vignole. Part of the northern lagoon area, far removed from the well-trodden tourist path, Vignole is a collection of stunning canals, fields, and traditional houses that blows every person away on our Venice culinary tours.

I like to come to Vignole, Venice, to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. The air is fresh, the rows of vines are delightful, and quiet waterways blend beautifully with pastoral views. Mornings here are calm with farmers at work, while the evening sunsets over the lagoon are truly mesmerizing.

After filling up on the best of Venice’s foods, you should allocate some of your time to visit Vignole. It’s easy to reach and can be visited even if you only have a small amount of free time. This guide includes everything you need to know before coming.

History and Significance

Vignole, Venice, was once a Venetian holiday resort as well as a strategic military site housing many powder stores. Sites like the nearby Forte di Sant’Andrea, designed by creative minds such as Michele Sanmicheli, played a key role in the area’s defense

Over time, much more was realized about the area’s potential. It transformed into an agricultural and horticultural island, thanks to its vast green spaces and opportunities for grape cultivation. For this reason, it was dubbed ‘Isola delle Sette Vigne,’ which means ‘the Island of the Seven Vineyards.’

Agricultural and Rural Life

Vignole is the ultimate place to experience Venice’s agricultural side and rural life. It won’t take you long to spot the smallholdings and gorgeous crops growing. Aubergines, peppers, and tomatoes can all be seen as you take one of the paths between fields that are ideal for walking or cycling

If you’re feeling peckish, the local farmers’ markets and stalls offering local products are well worth checking out for some fresh items.

Dining and Refreshments

Vignole may be small, but it has two restaurants and 2 bars/lounges with outdoor seating. One of which is the fabulous Trattoria alle Vignole. It has a rustic charm, tucked away right by the lagoon, with a wealth of specialties including a briny serving of sarde in saor.

Picture yourself indulging in a hearty breakfast or lunch in a quiet, scenic setting as wonderful as this. Vignole offers deep insight into local cuisine while also allowing you to experience Venice’s island culture.

How to Reach Vignole

Since Vignole isn’t connected to the mainland, the only way to access it is by boat. You can take ACTV Line 13 vaporetto from Fondamenta Nuove and ask the driver to make a stop at Le Vignole. They’ll understand what you mean.

When departing, you can return to Fondamenta Nuove and admire the Venice skyline as you pull up to shore. Or, explore some of Venice’s North Lagoon islands before heading back to admire the endless canal bridges.

Departures from Fondamenta Nuove are twice an hour. The first departure of the day is at 4:25 am, and the last is at 10:40 pm. On the way back, the first is 5:32 am, and the last is 12:20 am the following morning. Take into account that timetables are subject to change, so always do extensive research beforehand.

What to Do and See

To get the most out of your visit to Vignole, it’s good to plan your itinerary ahead of time. From walks along the rows of vines and small agricultural plots to snapping photos of the boats moored along the canal, you’re in for a fun day out at Vignole.

Don’t forget to stop at the historical military sites, either, like Forte di Sant’Andrea. I bet you’ll stumble across a viewpoint or two while wandering past the canals. The horticultural and pastoral areas are great for taking photos, especially if you meet a farmer who invites you onto their land to show you around.

Walking Tours and Itineraries

Vignole is a very small island with very few pathways. You will finish the main trail in a few minutes, but you can walk around the surrounding paths through the fields and canals

These are filled with stunning viewpoints, agriturismo locations, and quiet corners that are ideal for relaxation. There’s no better place to slow down and fully take in the lush surroundings of Venice.

Practical Visitor Information

  • If you’re seeking some peace and quiet, take a boat to Vignole, Venice, early in the morning. While tourism numbers here are generally limited, those who do come often arrive in the late mornings or early afternoons.
  • The locals on Vignole are very friendly and welcoming. But make sure to be respectful when on the island. If there are signs prohibiting outsiders from entering, do not trespass, or you could face issues.
  • Be careful around farmers’ crops when walking through the fields. Some areas might not have signs or markings. If you’re not paying attention, it’s easy to accidentally step on them.
  • It’s easy to explore Vignole in half a day at a chill pace. You’ll likely have some time left over with your day if you go early in the morning. So take full advantage of it by combining your trip with a visit to nearby islands. Places like Sant’Erasmo are a short boat ride away and have so much to see and do.
