It’s been said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and that certainly holds true in Athens Greece. From authentic Greek breakfast items like spanakopita and koulouri, to English and American breakfast foods like waffles and eggs benedict, there are many options to choose from.
To help you find good breakfast spots on your next Athens food tour, I decided to look at some of the top cafes and bistros offering morning meals in the birthplace of democracy.
Our Guides’ Favorite Morning Rituals
We believe that a proper Athenian morning begins with the aroma of freshly baked dough and a strong Greek coffee. Our team has identified the neighborhood spots where tradition is served daily, from hand-stretched phyllo to thick sheep’s yogurt. We look for the unpretentious corners where the local community gathers before the city fully wakes up. Book a food tour with us to learn more.
Zampano

Zampano sits in Athen’s trendy Psyrri neighborhood, which is festooned with interesting street art and tempting eateries. It’s also close to major tourist attractions such as Monastiraki Square and the Acropolis.
The décor at Zampano is cozy with a comfortable blend of rustic and industrial elements. There are areas of exposed brick wall, overhead warm lighting, large windows to let in the natural light, and just the right amount of wooden accents to give the dining room a contemporary bistro vibe. There’s also an outdoor seating area, which is a great place to enjoy breakfast on a warm morning.
Zampano’s breakfast menu focuses on fresh, Mediterranean-inspired dishes. Some of the most popular include eggs benedict with a Mediterranean twist, Greek omelet with Feta cheese, and even avocado toast.
However, my favorite breakfast item at Zampano is their yogurt parfait. It’s made with thick, protein-rich Greek yogurt, with crunchy walnuts, and lightly drizzled with locally sourced honey. I love how they even toast the walnuts to give them depth of flavor, and crunchy contrast with the creamy yogurt.
Zampano (€€) – Sarri 18, Athina 105 53, Greece – Open Wednesday to Sunday from 8:30 AM to 12:00 AM. Open Monday and Tuesday from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM.
ERGON House Athens

Ergon House Athens is a somewhat rare concept in that it combines a boutique food market with a modern Greek restaurant all under one roof. It’s conveniently located near Syntagma Square, the National Garden, the Acropolis, and the Ermou Street shopping district. Making it an easy stop for breakfast before setting out on a walking tour of some of the city’s finest attractions.
The atmosphere in Ergon House is contemporary yet it still manages to feel very much rooted in tradition. It has a somewhat industrial feel with high ceilings and sleek wooden accents. Yet there’s also plenty of greenery and organic elements that whisper to the look of old-world Greece.
While most locals come to Ergon House for its marketplace, the restaurant’s breakfast menu is more appealing to tourists. It features staples like Greek yogurt parfaits, koulouri, and even modernized dishes like eggs with avocado toast and feta cheese.
However, my favorite thing to have for breakfast at Ergon House is the spanakopita. It has delicate layers of crispy phyllo dough interspersed with verdant spinach and rich feta cheese. It was filling and had the protein I needed to get my walking tour day off on the right foot.
ERGON House Athens (€€) – 23, Mitropoleos Street, Athina 105 57, Greece – Open every day from 7:30 AM to 12:00 AM.

The Brunch Factory

If you’re the type of person who thinks breakfast is a meal that can be eaten any time of day, then The Brunch Factory is going to fit perfectly in your happy place. You can find it in the lively Kifisia neighborhood of Athens, within walking distance of the Goulandris Museum of Natural History, and the Kouvoutsakis Art Institute.
It’s immensely popular with tourists, with a bright and welcoming interior. The ambiance has a casual vibe that invites you to unwind a little. When you consider breakfast is always available, it’s my must-try spot for shaking off a bad case of west-to-east jet lag!
The Brunch Factory’s menu features a variety of breakfast items from American classics like waffles, pancakes, and bagels, to European fare like croissants and crepes. Not to mention a bunch of entry-point Greek classics like spanakopita and souvlaki.
I also appreciated that they had a lot of Western-style beverages. You can get simple black coffee, espresso, and all kinds of different fruit juices. Sometimes they even have breakfast items like ice cream, for times when you just want a little taste of comfort food.
I think the go-to breakfast item here is the “Brunch Factory Toast.” It’s a little bit of a spin on avocado toast except it’s topped with a poached egg, and then lightly drizzled with a delicious secret sauce.
I appreciate how the poached egg is cooked in acidulated water, which tightens the eggs, yet allows the inside to still be runny enough to act like a yolk sauce. This is one of those little details that’s easy for a cook to skip, yet it makes a real statement about The Brunch Factory’s dedication to quality.
The Brunch Factory (€) – Athinas 11, Athina 105 54, Greece – Open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Open Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
To Koulouri tou Psyrri

To Koulouri tou Psyrri sits in Athens’s lively Psyrri neighborhood, which is well-known for its vibrant street life. Popular nearby attractions like Monastiraki Square, the Ancient Agora, and the Acropolis make it an easy stop for an inexpensive breakfast to start your day.
The décor and ambiance inside To Koulouri tou Psyrri is traditional Greek, designed to show off their array of baked goods. They’re popular with locals and tourists alike, so efficient service is a priority, which also gives the place a down-to-earth vibe.
To Koulouri tou Psyrri is known for their koulouri. It’s a circular bread ring that’s very similar to a New York City bagel. It’s crunchy on the outside, soft inside, and typically crusted with sesame seeds. Many locals will argue that it’s the top koulouri in all of Athens.
The last time I passed through To Koulouri tou Psyrri I ordered two koulouri. One plain, which I put in my day bag to save for a snack, and the other I had with a soft anthotyro cheese.
The toasted flavor of the koulouri bagel was perfect with the mild cheese, and the sharply robust coffee I had with it. I think it also helped that the koulouri was still a little warm to help soften the cheese even more.
To Koulouri tou Psyrri (€) – Γεωργίου Καραϊσκάκη 23, Athina 105 54, Greece – Open 24 hours a day every day.
Provenance of Dairy in Athens’ Breakfast Scene
We find that the rich, tangy flavor of traditional Greek breakfast items comes from the high-quality sheep and goat milk sourced from regional farms. The thick, strained yogurt served with thyme honey and walnuts is a nutritional powerhouse that has sustained our people for centuries. We believe that using real butter and fresh eggs from the nearby Attica countryside is what distinguishes an authentic meal from a generic one. Sourcing these fresh ingredients supports the local pastoral traditions that are the backbone of our cuisine.
Athens’ Breakfast Etiquette
We suggest trying a “koulouri” from a street vendor if you are on the move, as this sesame bread ring is the quintessential Athenian breakfast-to-go. In a traditional “galaktopoleio” or milk bar, it is customary to enjoy your yogurt or bougatsa seated, often accompanied by a glass of cold water. We find that Greeks rarely rush through their first coffee of the day, viewing it as a moment of social connection rather than just a caffeine fix. A friendly “Kalimera” (Good morning) to the staff will always ensure a warmer welcome in our local neighborhood shops.
Conclusion
Adding one of the following breakfast spots to the start of your foodie visit to Athens is a great way to start your day off on the right foot. If you’re planning to explore the Acropolis or Syntagma Square, you can’t go wrong with places like To Koulouri tou Psyrri or Ergon House.
If you’re fresh off the plane in Athens and you need a comfort food breakfast to help fight the west-to-east jet lag, then The Brunch Factory might be the ideal breakfast spot. If you’re looking for an authentic taste of Greek breakfast foods, the yogurt parfaits and traditional breakfast items at Zampano might be the greatest way to start your day.
