Why Copenhagen Is One of Europe’s Great Dining Cities

Copenhagen_canal_side_restaurants

Copenhagen usually doesn’t get lumped in with the other big-hitting foodie cities around Europe, like Rome or Paris. But this city has redefined modern cooking through the New Nordic Movement, and its position in the global food scene is firmly established.

Dining here is defined by open kitchens and a relaxed yet refined service culture. Walk into a restaurant, and the aroma of fermented butter will take over, wood-fired smoke dominates the senses, and you can immediately smell the freshly baked rye.

One thing everyone who has joined our Copenhagen food tours will tell you is that you can spend as little or as much as you like here when eating out. From world-renowned tasting menus to neighborhood lunch spots with dishes for under €20, there’s something for everyone.

If you’re wondering where to dine in Denmark, these are my picks for the best restaurants in Copenhagen.

Michelin Star Restaurants in Copenhagen

What surprised me about Copenhagen when I first visited was the fact that it has a strong selection of Michelin restaurants. This is largely driven by the New Nordic Movement that brought Scandinavian food onto the world dining scene. Other factors also play a part, such as people having a lot of money to spend on a high-end dining experience.

Some of the standout Michelin locations in Copenhagen are big names with amazing tasting menus like Geranium and Udtryk. That said, if you want to eat in any of these spots, you’ll need to book ahead, as reservations are often snapped up months in advance.

The dress code at Copenhagen’s Michelin-starred restaurants is often smart. Just be aware that prices are on the higher end of the scale, but they’re well worth the splurge if you have the cash.

While tasting menus are often the focus at many Michelin establishments, you can sometimes find an à la carte menu as well at places like Marchal.

New Nordic Restaurants Worth Knowing

New Nordic dining is evident everywhere in Copenhagen. A meal prepared in this style, which showcases seasonal ingredients and sustainable practices, should be at the top of every foodie’s bucket list.

There are a handful of mid-range and emerging New Nordic spots with strong local followings that I recommend, like Vækst. Restaurants like these are always innovating with seasonal menus, foraged ingredients, and fermentation-forward cooking, so every time you visit, you can experience something new.

People often get confused about the difference between New Nordic and fine dining. To put it simply, the big difference is that fine dining focuses on luxury, whereas New Nordic is about flavors using local ingredients.

While some of the best restaurants in Copenhagen that offer New Nordic-style food have a high price tag, there are some that do it without being overly expensive, like Selma.

Cheap Eats in Copenhagen

Trying to save some money? You can still eat cheaply in Copenhagen at these spots.

For a tasty, good-value lunch, hit up somewhere like Meyers i Tårnet, which is often visited for its delicious smørrebrød.  Also, consider cheap bakeries like Skt. Peders Bageri, food halls like Torvehallerne KBH, and Broens Street Food for some scrumptious roadside eats.

I also like affordable neighborhood restaurants like Banh Mi in Nørrebro and Folkehuset Absalon in Vesterbro, that provide low-cost grub at fair prices.

Be aware that many people in Copenhagen eat lunch around 11:30 am, so try to plan your meals then for good deals. Additionally, avoid places with English menus and eating in busy tourist areas like Indre By, or else you’ll be charged more.

Restaurants by Neighborhood

If you’re here for a weekend and want to plan your eating adventure by neighborhood, this is how to do it.

Indre By, otherwise known as the city center, is filled with traditional Danish dining lunch spots like Restaurant Karla. Whereas Nørrebro features more multicultural menus like Gaza Grill, independent cafés like Mokkariet, and casual dinner options like Zócalo.

Vesterbro has many trendy wine bars and restaurants, such as Vores Vinbar, as well as modern bistros like Je t’aime. Then, if you make your way over to Christianshavn, things revolve more around canal-side dining and waterfront terraces with a relaxed neighborhood feel at spots like Christianshavns Færgecafé.

Waterfront and Outdoor Dining

Copenhagen’s waterfront and outdoor dining scene is a must for all visitors. Nyhavn harbor restaurants are great, like Hyttefadet, but avoid the overly touristy restaurants.

Summer outdoor dining culture, in particular, is big here, and canal-side terraces like Restaurant ORANJE are where to go for it. Be sure to also hit up Reffen Street Food market for some eats by the waterfront.

Booking, Reservations, and Dining Etiquette

Planning ahead for a city with a gastronomic scene like Copenhagen’s is important because tables book up fast. I suggest you book Michelin and popular restaurants 2 to 3 months in advance, or else you may struggle to get a reservation.

Walk-in options are always available, like the main food halls, and bar seating at high-demand spots sometimes pops up, so consider all options.

Just be aware that tipping culture isn’t a thing in Copenhagen, but at high-end eateries, a service charge is already added to your bill. If you want to leave something behind, a 10% tip is generally fine.

If you have dietary requirements, mention them to the server so they can notify the chef and tailor the dishes to your needs.

How to Eat Well in Copenhagen on Any Budget

Don’t let the rumors scare you. Trust me, you can eat well on any budget in Copenhagen.

You’ll likely find yourself stuck between splurging and saving. The way I like to do things is to balance one big meal with affordability by eating small meals at market stalls, and save dinner for a big meal to try traditional dishes.

Having something to eat at lunch is a smart move as it’s good value compared to other meals. You get the same quality food, just at a lower price, even at the best restaurants in Copenhagen.

Whatever you do, always order dishes featuring fresh ingredients, as these are the most nourishing and will let you experience Danish dining the right way.
