Whether you’re a history enthusiast or just want somewhere cool to visit while exploring Paris,

Palais Royal is sure to blow you away. Between the footsteps echoing through the arcades, the smell of coffee from nearby cafés, sunlight hitting the balustrades, and the sounds of fountains in the gardens, it’s unlike anywhere else.

At daytime, it’s perfect for peaceful strolls and gallery visits; by night, you can watch live theater performances and experience the café culture.

While Palais Royal isn’t a typical stop on our Paris food tours, it’s a place many of our guests find themselves during their time in the city. After exploring the many cafes in Paris and indulging in the food scene, you’ll want to stick it on your to-do list. This guide will help you make the most of your visit.

History and Evolution of Palais Royal

Understanding a bit about the historical evolution behind Palais Royal before you arrive will make the experience much more interesting. This was once Cardinal Richelieu’s residence, known then as the Palais-Cardinal, before becoming a royal palace under the influence of Louis XIV. It was also later owned by Louis-Philippe I, Duke of Orléans.

Over the years, it played a significant role in French history. It served as the royal family’s residence and an important space throughout the French Revolution and the July Revolution of 1830. In fact, during the French Revolution, it was even renamed the Palais de l’Égalité and developed a strong anti-Versailles identity.

One of its most notable features was the Galeries de Bois, which were covered arcades that became popular meeting spots for aristocrats. The palace’s courtyard has changed considerably over the centuries, gradually becoming more accessible to the public.

Architectural Features

The architecture is what people love most about Palais Royal, and I think we can all agree it’s pretty damn impressive. The grand garden facade, the Cour d’Honneur, the arcades, two wings, triangular pediments, Ionic columns, and balustrades all give the space a distinctive charm.

Another notable part of the palace is the 750-seat Palais Royal Theater, which you can visit after admiring the ornate galleries that connect the courtyards with shops and cafés. What you’ll notice immediately is the strong sense of perspective, rhythm, and harmony in the design, both inside and outside.

Gardens and Outdoor Spaces

As you walk through Palais Royal’s outdoor areas, you’ll be met by stunning French gardens, with lush planted flower beds, serene water fountains, and gorgeous tree-lined alleys. These are some of the most photographed spots, so be sure to have your camera ready. Other key sites include the Alley of Colette, which is a lovely walkway, and the peaceful ponds

The palace courtyard is a great public space for relaxing when you need to sit down for a while and just soak it all in. Across the gardens, you may also see some striking art installations and interactive experiences that are truly remarkable.

You’ll never have far to go between the gardens, galleries, and arcades, as there are plenty of connections between them. Almost anywhere you want to go can be reached on foot, unless it’s somewhere closed off to the public.

Cultural and Artistic Venues

Palais Royal’s theaters and galleries stand as true French institutions and historic monuments, and are deeply connected to Parisian culture and local life. The way they have been maintained to look as good as they do today is nothing short of spectacular.

Around the palace grounds, you’ll find theaters, galleries, and cultural institutions tucked inside historic buildings. Make sure to start with theaters like the Palais Royal Theater and Victor Louis’ second theater, as they can get quite busy. They provide incredible insight into how performances were held back in the day.

For art lovers, the Galeries de Beaujolais and de Montpensier showcase outstanding displays and offer plenty of shopping if you want to pick up a few souvenirs.

Dining and Shopping

Palais Royal isn’t all just sightseeing, although that certainly is one of the best parts! You can find plenty of cafés here with terraces that are perfect for a little pick-me-up in true Parisian style. It won’t be long before you get a whiff of fresh coffee brewing from establishments such as Grand Véfour, Café Kitsuné, and Café 52.

You’ll also come across a range of boutiques offering luxury goods and haute couture. Not to mention the refreshment kiosks and shopping arcades known for their distinctive designs and lasting historical and contemporary appeal.

Modern Usage and Institutions

The Palais Royal is home to many institutions, including government offices such as the Conseil d’état, the Constitutional Council, and the Ministry of Culture. In addition, it serves as an administrative center and cultural hub alongside public spaces

Throughout the year, it’s also possible for tourists to come and watch cultural performances at some of the main theaters like Comédie-Française and Théâtre du Palais-Royal.

What really makes the Palais Royal stand out is how it blends historic architecture with boutiques, cafés, and art galleries. It’s a versatile space that caters to visitors with a wide range of interests.

  • Things to see: Plan your visit around the palace’s most notable spots, like the main courtyard, gardens, arcades, galleries, theatres, and cafés.
  • Entry: All visitors are allowed to enter the palace’s gardens for free.
  • Opening hours: Palais Royal is open daily from 8:30 am to 10:30 pm.
  • Theater shows: If you plan to attend one of the shows held in any of the theaters, you should book your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment. They often sell out beforehand, so at least this way, you know you’re covered.
  • Photography spots: Visitors can find many good photography spots around the grounds, but my favorite for snapping some shots is by the Colonnes de Buren.
  • Seasons: Before arriving, you’ll need to decide whether it’s better to visit during the high season (June to August) or the low season (November to March). Things will be less busy during low season, so you’re more likely to have the place to yourself then.
  • Visitor numbers: The palace is generally quieter in the mornings, while afternoons tend to be busier. You should take this into account when deciding what time of day to come.
  • Permissions: Many visitors wonder whether photography is allowed at the Palais Royal. There are no restrictions prohibiting photos. Visitors are free to take pictures around the complex.
