If you’ve ever visited Prague, you’ll likely have noticed that there’s a plethora of restaurants near Old Town Square. Many of these, unfortunately, serve rather lackluster Czech food, often at unjustifiably high prices. However, you don’t have to veer too far off the beaten path to find affordable, high-quality eateries; you often just need to dig a little deeper!

This is something I frequently mention on my Prague food tours, so I felt it was time I put together a comprehensive guide to the best restaurants in Prague’s Old Town. Below, you’ll find a mix of authentic Czech restaurants, hidden gems in the Old Town, and international-style joints.

How to Find a Great Meal in Prague’s Old Town

Between the Astronomical Clock, Charles Bridge, and the Spanish Synagogue, there’s no shortage of fascinating points of interest in the Old Town. Of course, the abundance of attractions in a relatively small pocket of the city means that it’s typically packed with visitors and several overpriced places to eat and drink.

It’s easy to assume this area is overrun with tourist traps, but in reality, some of the best restaurants in Prague are in the Old Town. Move just a few minutes from the closest landmark, and you’ll have your pick of restaurants serving modern and traditional Czech food and global favorites, perfect for a mid-sightseeing lunch or relaxed dinner.

Top Restaurants in Prague Old Town

U Červeného Páva

Close to the Estates Theatre is U Červeného Páva, which regularly ranks among the best restaurants in Prague’s Old Town. The interior seamlessly blends modern and old-school decor styles, and this vibe is also reflected in the menu. For me, goulash is the must-try dish here, and the juicy beef, rich sauce, and airy bread dumplings are packed full of flavor.

U Modré Kachničky II

For an elevated dining experience, I recommend booking a table at U Modré Kachničky II, an elegant and intimate eatery located near the IAM Illusion Art Museum. My friends and I were particularly taken with the duck-based dishes during our visit, especially the roasted duck leg. The meat was deeply flavorful, as was the perfectly crunchy skin, both of which were complemented by the buttery fondant potatoes.

The Street Burgers

I didn’t expect to feast on any burgers during my last visit to Prague, but I couldn’t help myself from venturing inside when I walked by The Street Burgers in the southern section of the Old Town. Inside, it’s your typical burger joint with trendy, industrial-style decor and an extensive menu. The classic cheeseburger here was incredible, packed with succulent beef, a hefty serving of sharp cheddar, and smoky bacon.

GamberoRosso

Not far from the Astronomical Clock is GamberoRosso, a contemporary Italian haunt that’s one of the best restaurants in Prague Old Town for international fare. I can be rather fussy when it comes to Italian food outside of Italy, but this place was top-notch. Having been craving a pizza for days, the Neapolitan margherita really hit the spot, with its crispy crust, gooey mozzarella, and sweet tomatoes.

Lehká Hlava

If you’re on the hunt for a vegetarian restaurant, Lehká Hlava near the Story of Prague Museum should be at the top of your list. Not only is the food fantastic, but it has the most gorgeous, whimsical, old-world interior. I ordered the impossibly delicious spinach chimney, which consisted of tangy goat’s cheese and earthy spinach leaves served with garlicky potatoes and fresh pesto.

Restaurant Mlýnec

Ask anyone where to eat near Charles Bridge, and I’m confident you’ll be advised to visit Restaurant Mlýnec. Long considered one of the best restaurants in Prague’s Old Town, this upmarket bistro has a stunning dining room and a creative Czech menu. As soon as I tried the zingy but delicate veal tartare and mouthwatering chocolate ganache, I knew it wouldn’t be my last time dining here!

The time of day and vibe you’re looking for will determine what the best restaurant in Prague’s Old Town is for you.

For instance, riverside, rooftop, or intimate venues are ideal for romantic evenings or special occasions, while laidback taverns are popular with groups and solo travelers hoping to mingle with others.

If you’re keen to secure a meal in a particularly sought-after spot, swinging by around lunchtime is usually your best bet to avoid crowds and unlock more affordable prices.

Final Tips: Eating Smart in Old Town

Always check the menu before sitting down. If you don’t see any prices listed, chances are, it’s a tourist trap.
Confirm whether the service is included in the bill. If not, you might wish to add a 10% tip if you’ve enjoyed the service.
Beer and wine are often cheaper than bottled water or soda.
Rather than arriving at peak times, consider opting for a late lunch or early dinner.
If you’re hoping to dine near a popular landmark, consider moving just a street or two away to secure a more authentic, well-priced meal.
